The Need For Charisma:

As a Chairman, CEO or Managing Director your ability to communicate effectively to shareholders, investors and your workforce has always been important - but until recently a less than inspiring verbal performance at the lectern could be overcome and forgiven by delivering sparkling results on the balance sheet. However, in these challenging economic times, when profits are not easy to deliver, the ability to communicate effectively has never been more crucial for the senior business leader.

However, in these challenging economic times, when profits are not easy to deliver, the ability to communicate effectively has never been more crucial for the senior business leader.

The recent world recession, rising costs and declining markets mean that business acumen, experience, vision and hard work do not guarantee success. The reality is that you are probably working harder and more effectively than ever before but this is not showing on the balance sheet.

So at key moments, when you speak before your peers, investors and employees you need to not only communicate and connect but also to impress your audience; because, like it or not, you are being judged!

Many business leaders are exceptional at what they do and for the majority of their working lives display outstanding skills. Unfortunately, these are usually only seen by their close colleagues.  The rest of the watching world assesses a leader and judges his or her communication when they are standing in front of an audience at the AGM, a company conference or an investor briefing. Delivering a weak, unconvincing, performance can lead to months of endeavour, leadership and effort unravelling in minutes!

With good news often difficult to find these key moments of communication are now even more essential. Therefore, it is imperative that you, as the leader come across as charismatic, assured, confident, and calm. Your ability to inspire, instil confidence, motivate and galvanise action is paramount.  You simply MUST be able to hold the stage and truly communicate!

So great communication is essential for the modern business leader - but having established its need the question is can charismatic speaking be learned?

Certain people are born with a degree of ‘performance’ skill, but this is far smaller than people think.  Great speakers CAN be and ARE created.  The challenge which most business leaders have is that although they may have an MBA and a host of other relevant qualifications and experience few have ever been advised or coached on the key fundamentals of charismatic and effective speaking. The result is that weeks of hard work and endeavour are undermined by a weak and ineffective presentation.

This is not about spin or clever PR manipulation of your message.  This is about you, the leader of your organisation and your audience.  It’s about your standing up in front of them and delivering with charisma, confidence and conviction. It’s about you stamping your authority and command on your presentation, ensuring that all concerned are left in no doubt that you are the leader.

So the big question is how do you fare when it’s your turn to step into the spotlight.  Do you shine or does your speaking performance fall short of your normal high standards?

Please consider the following six questions.

  • Holding the audience ‘in the palm of your hand’ is a much desired skill, but do you have the tools, techniques and skill to achieve this?
  • While you might have a few pre-speaking butterflies (these are good) are they out of control or flying in tight formation?
  • Is your performance scattered with the hallmarks of truly great communication; i.e. the use of silence,  great tone of voice and poise?
  • When you speak do you inspire the audience, galvanise action and stamp your authority on the presentation?
  • Is your performance Obama’esq? Do you ooze confidence, charisma, poise and gravitas?
  • Do you really enjoy the experience of presenting or dread it?

A survey in America, a few years ago, discovered that talking in public was the number one dread of most people, ahead of death.  Some people would rather die than speak in public!

As a senior business leader clearly you do not fall into that category, but excessive anxiety in senior people is more common than you may think.  If this scenario is applicable then we can easily bring this situation in line via mind management techniques that our associate psychologist will explain.

So just how do you go about delivering a speech or presentation which truly matches your position and stature?

As with most skills, it is not something which can be achieved overnight but it can certainly be mastered quickly, once key techniques are explained and understood . Having coached senior business leaders for many years, we know that a small amount of potent, highly effective, professional assistance improves performance dramatically.

CEO Communications are experts in our field.  Our service is totally confidential and is based on over 30 years of presentation skills experience.  In brief we deliver tangible and dramatic improvements.

The last word on the need for charismatic speaking is this.

In 2005 a little known constituent MP called David Cameron elevated himself from outsider to winner in the race for leader of the British Conservative party back in 2005, all on the back of one great speech at the Conservative Party conference.  More recently we have witnessed the Obama phenomena, where Barack Obama - a little known Senator catapulted himself into the White House on the back of an incredible ability to communicate.  Lastly we have witnessed Gordon Brown fail to win the election mainly because of an inability to communicate and engage.

This is clear and compelling proof of what a 20 minute presentation can achieve when delivered with charisma and effectiveness creating an outstanding performance. CEO speaking can be learned!
